Mental Health Month
October is ‘National Mental Health Month’ in Australia, the timing centring around ‘World Mental Health Day’ (Oct 10), and aims to raise awareness of mental health and well-being in the wider community and encourage participation in life enhancing lifestyles.
1 in 5 Australians aged 16-85 experience a mental illness in any year, the most common being depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders.
There are many treatment options available to help if you are struggling and you need not go through it alone. Mental health conditions are often very treatable and need not necessarily be a long term condition when paired with an appropriate treatment. Click HERE to read more on treatment options.
Dogtober
It’s also ‘Dogtober’, focusing on the work of Assistance Dogs Australia who train the wonderful canines for the special lifelong working relationship they’ll have with their assigned human.
Which leads me to pets and the role they may have to play in mental health. Pets are a great source of companionship and affection, they love unconditionally and never judge. Research shows they can also help ease stress and reduce blood pressure.
Caring for pets can provide healthy routines in our lives and also encourage us to keep active. Exercise, like walking, has many benefits for your mental health and well-being and is necessary for dogs who need regular walks and love to explore the world of smells.
